HONED CONCRETE
A Honed or Ground Concrete finish is when we grind the top 3 – 4mm of concrete off to expose a small or large amount of stones depending on the required look. Finishing the floor with a 300 grit diamond cut, then the sealant is applied. We prefer to use an acrylic sealant or a solvent based sealer depending on the clients requirements.
Most people refer to “Honed Concrete” as “Polished Concrete”, a glossy finish with lots of stones showing – this is most commonly sealed with polyurethane. At Stone Heritage we choose not to apply polyurethanes as this is where most of our problems can occur including scratching, pealing, high cost and ongoing liability of maintenance.
Honed concrete is ideal for exterior areas or wet areas that require slip resistance. Honed concrete is initially cheaper than a Polished Concrete Finish and is more suited for low traffic areas.
Note: Concrete finishes are variable depending upon the quality of the concrete and how it has been placed. See the Stone Heritage Consultation page for how to obtain a better quality concrete.
As we are Queenstown’s specialists in concrete grinding we are always happy to advise on which finish may be most suited to your needs.
