Float Finished Floors over the last 18 months have become very popular, this type of finish is about 50% of the work that I am doing now for new house builds. I think this is because it looks softer and more natural look compared to the Full Grind and Polish and because it is half the price, making this floor finish a very attractive and cost effective option!
This is my favorite look and is what I have decided to use in my own house.
What to expect;
Float finish floors are a natural looking floor and each one is uniquely different from the next. The end result entirely depends on the day the concrete is placed, the concrete placer and the concrete plant from where it is batched. You can expect to see mottled variations in colour, trowel marks, pits and indentations and marbled effects all of which add up to the movement of colour and tone which gives this look so much character.
The Process;
The placer needs to be aware that a high level of finish is required. The concrete needs to be “burnished” with the Kelly Float.
Once the slab has been placed we apply a curing sealer to help protect the floor while the builders are standing frames. There are a few small things to be aware of in the building process to mitigate staining and damage and we discuss this with those involved so everyone is on the same page.
Once the building is closed in the concrete is polished and further sealers applied to give you all the benefits of a polished concrete floor. At this stage it is advisable to cover the floor for the remainder of the project.
Finally the floor is buffed prior to moving in.
